*Eng - Nursery Cryme is the third album by the band Genesis and the first after the departure of Anthony Phillips and John Mayhew, was recorded and released in 1971. It is also the first album to be the formation of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins and Steve Hackett. This training would be unchanged until Gabriel's departure in 1975 and is one of the most successful formations of the group. Nursery Cryme the group away from the sound of Trespass and dipped it into a new era. Most of the songs were composed between all group members. However, despite the incredible musical talents of Steve Hackett, his contributions were minimal during the time he was in the band. During the early days of the group, Banks and Rutherford wrote the bulk of the music, while Gabriel wrote most of the letters. With the arrival of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett rhythmic base group acquires a new role in which Phil and Mike Rutherford (bass) acquire a perfect rapport, plus the band's style takes some new nuances that deviate from the folk-style ether of her previous work and moving closer to jazz-fusion, but always under the personal style and complex lyrics house brand.
The moving image of the cover depicts scenes from each of the songs, was painted by Paul Whitehead, who was also responsible for the covers of Trespass and Foxtrot. In the book by Armando Gallo explains a little about this picture: The Musical Box had a sort of Victorian sentiment, and Whitehead was trying to create something that was really old, like a Victorian photo album. Mike (Rutherford) chose the green color of a painting by Dali. Things are more visible in the picture are: "Uncle Henry" Harold the Barrel, The Hogweed and Charterhouse School (on right). The flies in the corners are real, Whitehead varnished painting and then were stuck together. Apparently there are also an earwig. Cynthia is supposed to look very young but has really aged eyes. The labeling is based on some old letters he saw in a Victorian tin of cocoa.
Furthermore, Peter Gabriel wrote a short story for "The Musical Box" located at the top of the letters and which are also references that are reflected on the cover. The story goes like this: While Henry Hamilton-Smythe minor (8) was playing croquet with Cynthia Jane De Blaise-William (9), the sweet smiling Cynthia raised her mallet and removed her head gracefully to Henry. Two weeks later, Henry's room, she discovered his treasured music box. Eagerly she opened it and as "Old King Cole" began to sound a small spirit-figure appeared. Henry had returned - but not for long, because while standing in the room his body began to age rapidly, leaving a child's mind inside. The wishes of her life came to him. Unfortunately in trying to persuade Cynthia Jane to satiate his romantic desire led his nurse to go to the room to investigate the noise. Instinctively Nanny hurled the music box bearded child, destroying both.
The sound, though not as polished in terms of production as the albums that followed (most of the songs were recorded only in 8-channel), Nursery Cryme was a great progress of the group regarding their previous work Trespass. Although the sound is still in folk songs like "Harlequin" and "For Absent Friends", other songs showed a more aggressive and strident sound. The lead guitar Hackett contributed much to this content with powerful solos on songs like "The Musical Box," "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" and "The Fountain Of Salmacis. The battery was fair and accurate Collins, complemented with other instruments.
