El 11 de julio de 1981 la banda es filmada tocando en un festival. Al año siguiente el manager de Stevie le da la cinta a Mick Jagger, lo que permitió a la banda realizar una función privada en una fiesta de los Rolling Stones en el New York's Danceteria el 22 de abril de 1982. Poco después de eso la banda hizo la presentación más importante de su carrera cuando tocan en el Festival Internacional de Jazz de Montreux, Suiza, siendo la primera banda no programada de antemano en tocar en este recital. Fueron chiflados pero irónicamente ganaron un premio Grammy por la versión del tema "Texas Flood" en ese recital, que dio lugar a uno de los discos en vivo más increíbles de SRV: "Live At Montreux".
Stevie Ray progresivamente alcanzó el estrellato alrededor de esta época, cuando en 1982 contribuye con un disco de David Bowie y en 1983 es "descubierto" por John Hammond (Responsable de descubrir a Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday y Bruce Springsteen entre otros) luego de escuchar la grabación del recital de Montreux, quien le ofrece un contrato para grabaciones en Epic Records. Solo en 1983 sale su primer álbum, Texas Flood, luego de años de trabajo. Las repercusiones no se hicieron esperar, y Ray Vaughan fue elegido por la revista Guitar Player "Mejor Nuevo Talento", "Mejor Álbum de Guitarra (Texas Flood)" y "Mejor Guitarrista de Electric Blues", ganando 3 premios en un año, siendo necesario destacar también que era un debutante en la industria.
El 27 de agosto de 1990, un poco antes de la 1:00 AM, un helicóptero que llevaba a Stevie de nuevo a Chicago se estrella segundos después de su despegue. Las 5 personas que iban a bordo mueren. Una investigación posterior declara que se debió a un error del piloto.
